The K9 Sports Club was founded on December 30, 2002 when a group of Central Iowa UKC enthusiasts met to determine if there was an interest in forming a club. The interest was so great that 29 people attended that first meeting! Many of that original group are still active members today. We voted on a club name, voted in the first Board of Directors and decided on a date and location for our first Obedience Trials. The Club was originally licensed to hold UKC Obedience and Agility Trials, and Rally Obedience was added when UKC Rally became a sport.
The application for approval was sent to the UKC Events Department on January 3, 2003, with approval granted on February 5, 2003. Because of our members’ extensive experience in UKC Obedience our Club was able to host Trials immediately – the first K9 Sports Club Trials were held at Seelah Kennel and Training Center on October 3, 4 & 5 2003, only 9 months after the original interest meeting!
Our original Club membership list included 6 2002 UKC All Stars, one licensed Agility judge, and two licensed Obedience judges. 27 of our original members had already earned at least one United Companion Dog (UCD) title, twelve of those had previously earned at least one UCDX, five members had previous UUDs, and two had earned the UOCh title!
Since those first trials in 2003, we have held an annual Obedience Trial weekend every year. Members of the Club pitch in to clean, decorate, handle awards and prizes, coordinate a great raffle, cook, and of course steward. Our Trials are well known for the fun we have, as well as for being very exhibitor friendly. In April, 2010 we hosted our first Rally Trials – and they were no less successful than the Obedience Trials!
